Interannual trophic behaviour of a pelagic fish predator in the western Mediterranean Sea

چکیده
The exploitation of forage fish species can modify the functioning marine ecosystems potentially impacting population status predators. This may be case for western Mediterranean Sea, where a reduction in biomass two key pelagic (European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and European sardine Sardina pilchardus ) could produce change diet composition their main predators, which would consume alternative preys or size prey consumed. Here, we aimed to investigate potential effect Sea on trophic preferences little tunny ( Euthynnus alletteratus ), medium-sized predator that present high consumption these fish. We compared its interannual ecology by combining analysis stomach contents stable isotopes. Specifically, examined if changed habits (diet composition, size, niche) during 6-year period. found small fish, especially clupeiformes, were most important group study However, changes body relative importance recent years, probably reflecting reported area. In addition changes, an increase some demersal benthopelagic tunny, act as resource. • Trophic studied Clupeiformes group. Changes Increase

متن کاملInterannual Differences for Sea Turtles Bycatch in Spanish Longliners from Western Mediterranean Sea
Recent studies showed that regional abundance of loggerhead and leatherback turtles could oscillate interannually according to oceanographic and climatic conditions. The Western Mediterranean is an important fishing area for the Spanish drifting longline fleet, which mainly targets swordfish, bluefin tuna, and albacore. Due to the spatial overlapping in fishing activity and turtle distribution,...
متن کاملAn evaluation of surface micro- and mesoplastic pollution in pelagic ecosystems of the Western Mediterranean Sea.
This study examines the distribution, abundance and characteristics of surface micro- and mesoplastic debris in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 41 samples were collected in 2011 (summer) and 2012 (summer). Results, firstly, revealed that micro- (<5 mm) and mesoplastic debris were widely and uniformly distributed in this area with average concentrations of 130,000 parts/km(2) and 5700 parts/km(2)...

The present study was carried out during 2006-2007 along the southern Caspian Sea. The species composition showed that the common kilka, Clupeonella cultriventris caspia, is dominant species with 89% and then anchovy, C. engrauliformis, has shown only 8.7% while it was already dominant species in the past decades. The overall results indicated that common kilka was replaced with anchov...
